As you might know, we live in a period in which protecting the nature is a must. After years and year of exploiting the nature and polluting it for our own interests, we have realized that this must stop because in the long run we are only harming ourselves. I’m certain that you have all heard of the problems regarding the ozone layer, the global warming, and the melting glaciers.




I’m also sure that you have heard more and more people using the term green, or eco-friendly. More and more people are starting to use green sources of energy such as solar, hydro, wind, & geothermal. More and more people are starting to drive green vehicles, which use alternative sources of energy, thus reducing the pollution. Lately, more and more people are attracted to the path of a green job.

You might ask yourself: what is a green job? Accordingly to the United Nations Environment Program, a green job, or a green-collar job, is a work that contributes to protecting and restoring the quality of the environment. These jobs could be the answer to protecting the ecosystem whether by reducing the energy, or the water-consumption, or by minimizing the pollution. The green jobs are available in a wide area of domains including agriculture, administration, research and development, and others.  In these times of economical crisis, a green job could be the solution, because it could provide numerous working places, or it could save the ones which are in danger.  It is estimated that in the next ten years or so, more than 5 million green jobs could be available worldwide.

Traditional jobs could benefit from this as well, because with the aid of some new skills, or by using the old skills in new domains, they could be transformed.  Let me give you an example: creating a hydrofarm would require the skills of the steel workers, and the skills of electrical engineers could be used in creating the development of mass transportation.

People don’t fully understand what a green job is because the term is vague. It doesn’t represent a certain occupation such as policeman, or lawyer. The thing is that the term has to do with a certain work used in a certain activity and not with a certain occupation. An architect who designs the plan for an eco-friendly building can be still defined from a professional point of view as an architect, but he is also a green-collar worker, thus he has a green job.

As many people are attracted to the possibility of working in a green job domain, or being a green-collar worker, people might often ask the question: “how does it pay?” The answer is that a green job pays pretty well: it pays respectable salaries and it provides enough money to support a family. Besides the personal satisfaction of doing something beneficial for the nature, it also provides the opportunity of following a career path. So when someone asks you the question: “what is a green job?” you could give them the answer: a job of the future.
