The concept of green building uses a large variation of strategies during the design, building, and maintenance of a building project. For its entire lifespan, the building should aid the nature and under no circumstance should be damaging it.

This type of structure should be an eco-friendly one, a building which doesn’t require an exaggerated amount of material or energy to be used in its creation. It shouldn’t sacrifice its comfort, durability, and efficacy. A green building should reduce the overall maintenance and replacement costs over its entire lifespan. The role of such a building is also to improve the healthiness and the efficiency of its occupants. The design of such a building should be easier to create than for that of a regular one.

Now that I have presented you some regular features of a green building, let’s take a look at some of the materials that are used in its creation. First of all, a green building material is composed of renewable resources. The efficiency of such a material during its lifespan is much longer than of a regular material, and because of this, they are considered to be superior when it comes to protecting the environment.

In order for a product to be considered green, it should be resource efficient. In order to accomplish this task, a product should meet some of the following criteria: it should be durable, and easy to be recycled. A green building material should also be easy to find whether in a rural or an urban area, and it should be effortless to refurbish and manufacture.

It should not be toxic, should keep the chemical emissions to a minimum, and it should resist moisture. These materials should not be hard to clean and they shouldn’t require toxic methods of cleaning.

A house made out of green building materials should be energy efficient and there are certain tricks that one could use in order to accomplish this. The house should be in harmony with the nature, it should use it. Solar panels could be placed in order to provide an alternate source of energy. Green roofs can also be used in order to prevent the house from overheating, to filter pollutants, and even insulate it from sound.

In places with trees, the windows should be placed behind them, in order for the house to be in shade during the summer and to receive the Sun’s heat during the winter. It is preferable that the roofing should contain light colors in order to prevent overheating.

The insulation used for ceilings and walls should be R-valued, for the same purpose as the one mentioned above.  Water management is a problem that needs to be solved, and there are many solutions for it. You could use, low-flush toilets, low-flow shower heads, dual plumbing, and so on. As you can see, it's not that hard to create you own eco-friendly house. As long as you have the right materials for the job, that is.
