Pollution And Green Buildings

The world is evolving and with it so is the technology. One of the most important breakthroughs in the technology happened during the industrial age with the industrial revolution when the people have witnessed impressive technological achievements, and an increase in the usage of resources.

This activities and achievements did not come without side effects and one of these were toxic wastes, pollution, deforestation, global warming. All of these effects are influential to the environment in a negative manner because it constantly damages it.

The buildings are closely related with the technological evolution because since the upper mentioned period bigger and taller buildings have been built. What you might not know about the buildings is the fact that the buildings are very polluting, as they use 2/5 out of the world’s materials and energy, and require 25% of the world’s wood harvest. They emit lots of CO2 gases, require fresh water withdrawals. The pollution and green buildings go hand-in-hand.

The truth is that the buildings are very lucrative for example in the United States of America the buildings represent more than 50% of the country’s wealth. The buildings also offer lots of job opportunities, as more than 10 million people are working in the domain. Because the materials and energy required creating these buildings are diminishing, people have turned to other energy sources and materials, which are renewable and sustainable.

Such a building using sustainable energy sources and sustainable materials will be energy efficient, will use less waste than a regular building, it will last longer than a regular one, in fact there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to these buildings.

The materials used for these buildings must meet the following requirements in order to be considered green: they must be cost-effective, low emitting and aesthetic. The process for obtaining them must be lower than the process of obtaining a regular material. They must also be durable and easy to maintain, and also not to require too much repairing.

Some of the benefits of a green building from and economical and environmental point of view are: the energy requirements for electricity are reduced by 50% because a green building will take advantage of all the available resources of energy, whether sun, wind, water, biomass, and so on.

Also, the energy requirements for heat are reduced by 60%. The water consumption in these buildings is reduced by 30%, and the operating expensive required is lower than in the case of the regular buildings. It is estimated that the productivity of the employees working in such buildings is increased by 16%, because their comfort is increased as well as their health, and this means benefits from an economical point of view. These are just some of the facts regarding pollution and green buildings.
