Green building, also known as green architecture or sustainable building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are responsible to the environment and use efficiently the resources given throughout the whole building’s life cycle: “from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction”. This practice comes as an alternative to contemporary and industrial buildings that are now found all over the globe, which don’t take care of environment and continue to massively pollute and destroy the nature we should all protect in stead.

Although new technologies are constantly being developed to contribute to a sustainable extinction towards the globe and to create greener structures, the common objective is that those green buildings diminish the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the nature by using the energy more efficiently, as well as water and other resources, protecting people against pollution and offering them greener alternatives to their jobs, or at least subventions for working in toxic environments such as mines or reducing the waste, pollution and all in all, the degradation of the environment which is no longer clean and green as we took it from our ancestors.

A similar concept but on a smaller scale is the so called natural building which tends to focus on the usage of natural and organic materials that are available locally as much as possible. There are several materials that are rated as being green and therefore, used in local constructions of homes and small buildings which protect and not harm the environment, such as wood and its composers, recycled plastic, natural fibers, glass, bamboo or even recycled rocks, toxic-free fabrics and paintings.

The goals of green building are many, but among them, the most important is reducing the pollution and help build a greener Earth both for us as well as for our children to come. The concept of sustainable development can be traced to the energy crisis and the environment pollution concern in the 1970s. Thus, people have started paying more attention to what effects these standard energy resources have upon lands and waters and tryed see into the future and looking for non abusive ways to light the streets and not only, by using solar panels which attracts solar energy, wind turbines and water centrals.

Yet, not only governments and ecologists have attended to this massive green movement, but more and more people from all milieus have started concerning about the environment also; this is why, we all are trying to make efforts for a more sustainable green life style, by buying local and organic products, using energy resources more effectively, by recycling and other small steps which, gathered together, can have a huge benefic impact upon environment, in addition to developers who are implementing more and more green technologies in their architectures and buildings.

Some of the most wonderful indigenous building forms originate in the African continent, from the vivid colored mud huts to the lavish intricacy of the Alhambra. With such eye delight, no wonder that the African design sense has intrigued over the centuries the Western world, including the Romans and the Ancient Greeks. Yet, what may seem at first sight for the uninitiated ones just a pretty and beautifully colored picture, African buildings are rarely just for eye catching purposes; the structures hide well-kept secrets, the shapes are built with milimetric precision based upon harsh mathematical calculus and the results are beating perfection.

For sure, the best known buildings in the world are the great Egyptian pyramids which have captivated our imagination for thousands of years, their mysteries having not been solved yet, after all these years. And while old buildings are still triumphing with their greatness and stability despite all wars and natural hazards, new buildings are rising in contemporary Egypt, trying to make room for newer technologies in the desperate need to outstand ancient values and its simplicity towards combining bricks and the materials used.

There have been many books published regarding the unique style of African architecture, yet one of the best so far is “The Art and Architecture of Islamic Cairo” by Richard Yeomans, published in 2006. If you want to know more about the culture and architecture of Ottoman period in Egypt and its capital, Cairo, this book will for sure reveal you new horizons. Still, don’t hope for anything that stands for modern Cairo; there is no room for glass and steel buildings in the ancient or Ottoman architecture, just pure art in its decorative way- from ceramics, glass, woodwork, metalwork, to textiles and manuscripts, all examined in the Museum of Islamic Arts from Cairo.

Speaking of the new development of modern Cairo, the capital, just as any other major city and capital in the world, has evolved alot in terms of civilization and culture, borrowing elements from the modern skyscrapers and combining them with natural and local elements in a true alchemy of visual arts. The contemporany Cairo, following a global trend, is focusing lately on rather green architecture. Khaled Asfour, professor at an International Egyptian University, suggests that a combination of traditional architectural devices and new techniques could lead to much more civilized and energy aware buildings, and for a country which has nothing more but sun, solar energy could be a blessing for bills and population.

Mohamed Awad is another architect who believes in healthy and green buildings, as he was from te beginning eager to recylce local natural materials in his constructions, resulting the wonderful Alyli Villa in Alexandria. Another great feature of the green building designed by Awad is that it doesn’t rely on mechanical air conditioning for cooling, thus it doesn’t contribute to global warming, the most serious problem the environment is confrunting with in the 21st century.

The U.S. Green Building Council, or easily known as the USGBC, officially announced in 2008 that The Palazzo Las Vegas is the largest green building in the world. The Palazzo is a green complex created for the benefit of the environment, as well as for the benefit of all citizens of Las Vegas. The building was provided with a LEED certificate, as in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which means the building respects nature standards for preserving energy methods, recycling and preserving the water supplies. It is said that

The Palazzo employs such effective environmentally-efficient technologies that it conserves enough water to provide each citizen of Nevada with 266 eight-ounce glasses of water for a year, as well as saving enough energy to light 100 watt light bulb for 12,100 years.” It even promotes alternative transportation methods by offering a funny and ingenious valet parking for bicycles. How green is that?

Some of the features The Palazzo provides are the swimming pools which are totally heated with an expansive solar pool heating system. The system is so intelligent, that during hot summer days, the excess amount of solar energy provided by the panel is directed to the central water heating system of the hotel, helping to reduce costs a lot. Other energy effective measures imply the air conditioning system which is controlled to a higher temperature when guests are not present, so that when they come back they can manually set the desired temperature. So, under these circumstances, The Palazzo Las Vegas is by far the greenest building in whole Nevada state.

However, I’m sure you’re fund with the well-known phrase “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”. Still, this is not sustainable for people of Nevada state who want to be recognized as a green state which offers many alternative solutions to overheating, massive energy consumption and many others. So, beside the already mentioned Palazzo which seems to be in front of any other green building across the States, there are also some other buildings worth mentioning, you’ve guessed, in Las Vegas!

Other LEED-designed projects include CityCenter – The Future of Urban Living as they say. The Building is a 76-acred city-within-city concept designed with green technologies to make it one of the world’s largest environmentally sustainable urban communities. It includes shops, commercial areas and many others more that, under the regular level of pollution within the city, it totally looks like a green and fresh escapade.

The Echelon Place cost around 4.4 billion dollars and is a mixed-use space on the Las Vegas Strip. Still, due to massive costs and other problems, construction was temporally suspended.

Another building worth mentioning is the Uniun Park, which is a 61-acre development by the City of Las Vegas, also being the first project to be accepted as part of the U.S Green Building Council. It includes a world jeweler center, the “Keep Memory Alive” Foundation and many others more.

Living green is a concept dealing with many ideas, tips and solutions which could enable us to protect the environment by taking the right decision in everything we do if we are willing to do so. It is easy for us to find our nowadays numerous useful and interesting aspects for us in this respect and in which way to discover the way in which we can all live a better life in this world in which the environment needs to be protected for this to be made possible.

There are many things which we should all consider important these days because they refer to our life and to the way in which the quality of life on Earth can be improved so as for further generations to be supported in this world as well. In this respect, we should all be interested in the importance of green buildings as well because they are also an important part in our lives and we can all live greener by building a green house for us and by continuing to live in a green way after the house is being built.

The importance of green buildings should become familiar to every person living in this word as it depends on us what decision we take in this respect and the way in which this decision might positively or negatively influence the quality of our life in this world. We are responsible for ourselves and for the world in which live. We need to be willing to do what is best for us and to take the right decisions in this respect.

When trying to establish the importance of green building it is first of all important for us to understand very well what green building actually refers to. In this respect, it might be useful to be mentioned the fact that green building refers to the practice in which all sorts of structures are being created by involving the use of diverse types of processes which are not considered to have negative impacts on the environment. Such processes can be considered to be the operation one, the maintenance process, the renovation process and many other similar ones which need to be made in certain ways and by using certain materials which might not be harmful to us in any way.

It is all related to how we decide to live and to the fact that we need to care about the way in which our house is being built and the ways in which we are living in it so that we might be able to live a healthier life and to improve in this way the quality of life on Earth as well. Such aspects enable us to easily realize the importance of green building in our lives nowadays in a world in which the environment needs to be protected so as for us to be able to live a better life on this planet.

When discussing about the importance of green building in our lives nowadays there are many aspects which could be considered in this respect. Such green buildings can enable us to do some of the things which are required for us to do if we are willing to save life on this planet on which we live. Such actions refer to the idea of reducing the use of water and energy, reducing waste and pollution and many other similar ones which are essential in the world in which we live. Everything is related to us and to what kind of decisions we take. We should care about us and about the way in which future generations might live in this world as well.

Living green represents a concept which has become more familiar in the last few years, because it has been better understood the necessity for living in a better world by protecting the environments surrounding all of us. Many people have understood just how important it is for all of us to get involved in certain actions which might assure a better future for all of us.

Even if some green living ideas do not seem to be very significant every little step matters and all of these steps can really bring a change in our conceptions and our way of living. The idea of green living is very much related to eco construction. In the last few years there have been many people interested in the idea of creating green buildings which have been thought by following the concept of green living. Also related to this aspect are the flat roofs found in green buildings, which should also be taken in consideration by people when deciding to build such constructions.

When discussing about flat roofs for green buildings we have to mention what this type of roofs actually mean so as for their role to be better understood. In this respect, it can be said that flat roofs used for green buildings are partially or totally covered with plants and special types of soil, according the way in which they are planned to be created. There are also some types of such roofs which include other additional types of so-called layers. Such layers include all sorts of irrigation types of systems and root types of barriers, which combat import damaging effect to the environment. Also important to be mentioned is the fact that container types of gardens placed on such roofs are usually used for the maintenance of pits.

Any discussion on flat roofs for green buildings has to include the main purposes for which they are actually useful to be used. Such purposes are the process of absorbing rainwater, the necessity for a habitat especially created for wild life to be established and maintained and also very important, the necessity for the heat island type of effect to be combated as it can cause damage to the environment surrounding us and in this way it can affect all of our lives. The idea of flat roofs for green buildings is also known to refer to all sorts and forms of green technology which is usually included in such eco type of constructions. The beneficial functions of this type of roofs are numerous and various.

Some of the most important functions are represented by the reduction of heating types of loads on a construction, increase of roof type of necessary life span , insulating these buildings for certain sounds and also very important, filtering all sorts of pollutants which can also damage the environment. It is necessary for all of us to take in account the necessity for certain small steps in improving the environment to be taken so that in the future we might live in a better world, in a clean environment. Flat roofs for green building represent one of the many aspects which we can become familiar to us in relation to this concept.
